Richard “Dick” Stebbins

It is with great sadness that we announce that our beloved PDG team member and Regional Director of our Fort Pierce Branch Office, highly respected and widely acknowledged architect Richard G. (Dick) Stebbins passed away on June 21, 2012.

As the senior partner in several Treasure Coast architectural firms, Dick had been the face of Fort Pierce architecture for over 40 years prior to his retirement in the late 1990’s. George Powell, PDG founder and CEO, was successful in coaxing Dick back into the profession to head up our Fort Pierce Branch Office, which opened in August 2006. The ties between Stebbins and Powell dated back to 1979, when at the age of 26 and fresh out of graduate school, George Powell joined Stebbins’ Fort Pierce architectural firm, working there for 4 years. Dick continued to serve as a valued mentor and friend to George through the many years since establishing Powell Design Group in 1984.

A life-long, dedicated Gator fan, Dick received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Florida in 1954. Dick went on to amass a portfolio of distinguished projects that included 18 community college buildings, over 40 schools, dozens of religious projects, and numerous post offices, office buildings and banks. He was also responsible for the design of the Fort Pierce Police Station, the Sheriff’s Administration Building and the St. Lucie County Courthouse. Along with a busy architectural practice, Dick was also an active participant in the civic life of his community, serving as President of the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the St. Lucie County Planning and Zoning Board, and as a member of the Regional Planning Council.

After joining Powell Design Group in 2006, Dick was the Quality Control and Construction Manager for PDG’s Renaissance on the River, a $24.9 million multi-use project that occupies a full city block in historic downtown Fort Pierce. As little as a month ago, Dick was still actively engaged in meeting with potential clients and serving as Powell Design Group’s gracious and capable representative in the Fort Pierce area.

Dick’s wry sense of humor, dedication to his profession, loyalty to his friends and colleagues and his special relationship with all of us at Powell Design Group, will be greatly missed. Godspeed, Dick.
